GRAMMAR
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
- The study of English Syntax and hence making the student aware of the importance of the grammatical items and their function in the language
- Enabling the student to analyze the English language both grammatically and semantically, thus contributing to
- the development of skills required for the effective use of written standard English;
COURSE CONTENT:
INTRODUCTION: a- Types of sentences: Simple- Compound- Complex;
b- Elements of a sentence:
i) semantically defined
ii) syntactically defined.
c- What is a phrase? What is a clause?
SENTENCE ELEMENTS:
- Adverb Phrase: - What is an adverb?
- Modification within the adverb phrase;
- Adjective Phrase: - what is an adjective?
- Modification within the adjective phrase;
- Noun Phrase: - What is a noun? (gender; number; case);
- Modification within the noun phrase;
- Verb Phrase: - Types of verbs: static/dynamic; Transitive/Intransitive...
- Tense and Aspect;
- Passive;
- Reported Speech;
- Conditional sentences;
- Modality;
- Verb Complementation.
